Should high schools require students to read the "classics"?

1)- I think that high schools should require students to read the "classics" for many reasons some being that it can help build our reading skills. Also many old "classics" have very important meaning that can help us a lot. The "classics" are also very good lables. In the packet it states," I firmly believe that reading "classics" gives one a perspective about what it means to be human that is hard to achieve otherwise". (page 1) This explains that she believes that we should read "classics" because it gives us a perspective about what it means to be human. It also states in the packet,"The act of reading can be one of the most creative, imaginative activities that I have found". (page 1) This explains that she thinks that reading is the most creative thing and that it can help kids. Even "classics"

                             The Underworld!

1)-   Some values and beliefs that are reflected in Ancient Greek culture towards the underworld are religion. The underworld was basically divided into 4 religions. Fields of Mourning, Tartarus, Asphodel Meadows, and the Elysian Fields.

2)-  Yes I do recognize similarities between the Greek's beliefs toward death and the underworld and to those that are held in the religion because they believed that the gods would take care of them when they died and they would not go to the underworld.

3)-  The journey of the soul is an elaborate process because, now more and ore people are starting to get in the underworld. It can't be simpler because then it would be easy for people to get into the underworld.

4)-  I think the hero needs to visit the underworld because they need to learn what the people are doing in the underworld and maybe somehow use it to their advantage.

Dear Freshies,

Last Quarter I made you post about some of the goals you wanted to set for yourself. We've been in the classroom for half a year now. I want you to access the goals you set for yourself. Have you achieved them? If they were more long term - have you made the appropriate steps to reach those goals?

After you access your goals, I want you to do the following:

Think about and list 2-3 subjects / interests you would like to major at college

Think about and list 2-3 colleges you are interested in attending

For the goals i made myself in the beginning of the year i have achieved some of them while some others i have not achieved. For some of these goals I have tried very hard to achieve them while for others i just simply gave up.This year i will try to achieve all these goals i will make.

2 subjects i am interested in is math and science

2 collages i want to go to is Queens collage and St Johns University

Foundational work/texts I plan on using for your project would be a book by Sánchez González written in the 1980's it  discusses the theoretical and ideological underpinnings of her approach issues of race, gender, and class. Some questions I will use for my research and reading is, When was Puerto Rico found? And by who?

For this blog post I want you to think of 2-3 civilizations / cultures whose literature you would want to research (e.g. Polish, Vietnamese, Irish, French, Sudanese, etc.)      After you have your 2-3, I want you to pick the one you are most interested in, and explain to me why.

The three cultures that I would love to research would be Poland, French, and the United kingdom also known as Britain. The one culture I would most be interested in would be Poland. I would be most interested in Poland because I would like to know more about were I came from and more about my past family how and where they lived. I would love to learn about how they worked what they did in their free time. I would love to know about my family's background

                                               The end of Gilgamesh!

Question= For this blog post, I want you to share any salient points that stuck out to you. Try to focus on what hasn't already been said in class. Also, I want you to consider the following question "How do the insights from this video change or shape your thoughts on The Epic of Gilgamesh."

Answer=  We learned some new things when watching the video a couple days ago. But some salient points that stuck out to me was that the gods sent down Enkidu to teach Gilgamesh about his power. One other salient point that stuck out to me was that the original "Gilgamesh" copy was written in hylogrifics and when we found them they were turned into a copy that everyone could read and enjoy. The insights from this video shape my thoughts of 'The Epic of Gilgamesh" because I learned many new things about Gilgamesh and Enkidu then I did before. Another one would be that we have not found all the clay tablets to finish the whole story of Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Gods they are still somewhere out in the world.
